Introduction | iodine pentoxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula I2O5. This oxide of iodine is the anhydride of iodic acid. Iodine pentoxide is the only stable oxide of iodine. |
Structure | The I-O-I bond angle in I2O5 is 139.2 °, but this molecule has no mirror symmetry element, its molecular symmetry is therefore not C2v. The length of the I-O bond at both ends is about 1.80 and the length of the I-O bond at the bridge is about 1.95. |
Application | iodine pentoxide can be used as an oxidant and for carbon monoxide in the gas. Oxidation of carbon monoxide to iodine dioxide, gas analysis, removal of carbon monoxide in the air. |
Use | in gas analysis for the determination of carbon monoxide used as oxidant and for the determination of carbon monoxide in gas. Oxidation of carbon monoxide to iodine dioxide, gas analysis, removal of carbon monoxide in the air. |
production method | 1. The iodic acid was heated to 90-110 oC for partial dehydration and then warmed to 220-240 oC for reaction, with always purified dry air passing through. At a constant temperature of 4H, the reaction was completed. Then it was slowly cooled to room temperature and sealed for storage to obtain iodine pentoxide. 2. Dehydration of iodate to iodine pentoxide. Accurately weigh a certain amount of HIO3 into the glass crystallizer so that its thickness does not exceed 3cm. The crystallizer was then placed in a drying oven and slowly heated to 140-145 °c. This temperature was maintained and dried for 2-2.5h with constant stirring. The end point of the dehydration reaction was determined by the weighing method, and the weight loss was 5.11%, and the yield was 100%. Dehydration of HIO3 for 3H at 110-120 °c in a vacuum with a weak oxygen flow yields pure I2O5 free of iodine contamination. |
